Transcript Reading

This page is under construction as of September 20, 2017. This page will contain information on how to read a transcript.

Transcripts Overview

The New York City Department of Education uses standardized course codes across all schools to make transferring schools easier. It, however, means that transcript codes can be challenging to read.

Permanent Record vs. Transcript

A permanent record is the collection of student work organized by department and subject. This makes it easier to determine credit accumulation in subjects and ensure graduation requirements are met.

A transcript is the official collection of work completed, organized by term taken. This is what is sent to other academic institutions, including colleges. Transcripts are not official unless signed and sealed.

Actual Credits vs. Credits Earned

The number of actual credits refers to the number of credits a student attempted. The credits earned number represents how many of those credits were earned by passing the course for credit.
